$900K settlement reached in Flint bar raid
Dozens of people will share $565,000 to
settle a lawsuit that claimed police illegally searched and
arrested patrons of a Flint dance club in 2005.
Legal fees and expenses raise the total settlement to $900,000.
Officers entered Club What’s Next to investigate possible drug
activity. Customers were handcuffed and searched. Charges of being
in a drug house were dismissed when a judge found no probable cause.
The settlement was approved Monday by a federal judge. Lawyer
Michael Pitt says 66 people who were at the bar are covered by the deal.
The city of Flint and its insurer are paying most of the
$900,000. Genesee County and Mount Morris Township are also contributing.
Flint lawyer Dan Klemptner says a settlement made sense because
of the costs of the litigation.
